First phase of Perelik Project to begin next year
An official presentation, held on June 19th, 2008 revealed that the construction of the much anticipated Perelik tourism centre will take anywhere from four to seven years. The first stage of the construction will begin next year.
The idea of the project began back in 2001 when Deputy Mayor of Smolyan developed a Local Economy Development strategy for the city which has been revised and re- revised from then until 2004.
The goal of the plans is to improve the quality of service in Pamporovo and in the Rhodope Mountain and to engender opportunities for the development of all year round tourism.  Among these is the realization of a public sports centre and sport facilities: 28 km. of ski runs, a system for the construction and exploitation of ski lifts and drags, additional restaurants, improvement of existing infrastructure, transport bases, electricity, drainage, telecommunications and water conducts.
This is by far a grandiose project which will inevitably change the resort of Pamporovo and the Smolyan Municipality in general and will perhaps further popularize them as world class holiday destinations.
