Location of Pamporovo
Although primarily known and recognized as a ski resort, Pamporovo is suitable for all year round tourism and vacationing. At an altitude of 1620 meters above sea level, it sprawls on the Rhodope Mountains- one of Bulgaria’s most beautiful mountain range. It is some 240 km. long and about 100- 200 km. wide. There are 15 reserves in the region, some of which are under UNESCO protection and the mountains are most well known for having the largest coniferous woods on the Balkans. There are plenty of archeological sites throughout the region which relate to the cult of Dionysis and one such place of historical significance is Perperikon.
Situated in the southern part of the Rhodope, the highest peak in the area of the resort is Snejanka and rises at 1928 meters. Sofia lies 260 km. to the north, Plovdiv is 85 km. away and the city of Smolyan (which belongs to the same Municipality as Pamporovo) is only some 15 km. south of the resort.
The mountain is gently rounded and it is particularly appropriate for beginners. For avid skiers, there is a Giant Slalon run which will challenge even the best trained.
